Coffee Milkshake (With Ice Cream)
Coffee Milkshake is a thick and creamy drink made with vanilla ice cream, sugar, chilled milk and instant coffee. This easy coffee milkshake recipe comes together in about 15 minutes and makes a refreshing dessert drink for warm days.
About Coffee Milkshake
During the hot Indian summers, I often make cooling drinks such as Falooda, Watermelon Juice, Mango Shake, Lassi, and Banana Shakes. When I want something chilled with a coffee flavor, this Coffee Milkshake is an easy option.
Unlike my Cold Coffee recipe, which is made mainly with milk, this milkshake uses Vanilla Ice Cream as one of the main ingredients. The ice cream gives it a thicker, creamier and more dessert-like consistency.
You do not need a coffee maker to prepare this recipe. Simply dissolve instant coffee in a little warm water, let it cool slightly, and blend it with chilled milk, sugar and vanilla ice cream.
You can serve the coffee milkshake as it is or top it with additional scoops of ice cream. The extra scoops are optional but makes the Coffee Milkshake richer and creamier.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Instant Coffee: Instant coffee is convenient and dissolves easily in warm water. I also use it to enhance the flavor of Chocolate Cake and desserts. You can use instant coffee powder or fine granules. You can also use a small amount of strong Filter Coffee decoction. Make sure the decoction is completely cooled before blending it with the ice cream.
- Water: Use only the amount of warm water listed in the recipe to dissolve the instant coffee and sugar. Adding more water will thin the Coffee Milkshake.
- Sugar: Add sugar according to your taste and depending on the sweetness of the ice cream. I use regular white sugar, but raw sugar, brown sugar, powdered jaggery, cane sugar or coconut sugar can also be used.
- Milk: Use cold or chilled whole milk for a smooth and creamy consistency. Do not add too much milk, as it can make the milkshake thin.
- Vanilla Ice Cream: Vanilla ice cream forms the creamy base of this coffee milkshake. You can also use Chocolate Ice Cream for a mocha flavor or coffee ice cream for a stronger coffee taste.
- Ice Cubes: I also add a few ice cubes along with the ice cream to make the Coffee Milkshake colder and slightly frothier. You can skip them if you prefer.

Optional Variations
- Make it dairy-free: Use plant-based milk and dairy-free vanilla ice cream. Oat milk, almond milk or cashew milk work well.
- Make it decaf: Use decaffeinated instant coffee, cooled decaf brewed coffee or decaf espresso.
- Add more flavor: Blend in a little chocolate, caramel, almond or hazelnut syrup. Start with a small amount, taste and add more if needed.
- Add protein: Blend in a scoop of your preferred protein powder. You may need to add a little more milk if the coffee milkshake becomes too thick.
Helpful Tips
- Coffee: You can use your preferred instant coffee or a small amount of strong Filter Coffee decoction. Let the decoction cool completely before blending.
- Consistency: Use vanilla ice cream as one of the main ingredients and add the amount of milk listed in the recipe. You can use slightly less milk if you prefer a thicker consistency. This helps keep the Coffee Milkshake thick and creamy.
- Sweetener: You can use white sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar or jaggery powder. Adjust the quantity according to your taste and the sweetness of the ice cream.
- Garnish: Garnish with chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, chocolate chips, chocolate shavings or an extra scoop of ice cream.

Hi mam, how are you ?I have two questions,,, first will ice cream made using heavy cream give more better results instead of using amul cream ?or both will give same results? My second question is can I use single acting baking powder in the same quantity instead of double acting as
the second one is giving bitter results ?
i am fine shuchi. with heavy cream the ice cream will have a more creamier and smooth texture than with amul cream. whipping or beating heavy cream is easier and takes less time. i have not used single acting or double acting baking powder. what i buy is just baking powder. i assume the regular baking powder is single acting. so you can use it any baking recipe posted on the website.
Hi i am not getting any reply from your side… Please reply…. Its a request
geetika have replied you aready thanks.
Where are my recipes getting saved? I used to save them and it used to open some other website. Now even that is not happening.
thanks sudha for letting us know. we will look into it. the recipes were getting saved on bigoven.com. you can check them here.
Hi I already do it this way and it tastes fabulous. you can also add fresh cream or home made thick malai for a creamier texture. I add both, a bit of ice cream and fresh cream. vanilla ice cream is best for blending though for topping chocolate gives a nice mocha effect.
Looking forward to more summer recipes.
thanks a lot richa for these tips and suggestions. i do add cream at times, but since i was adding vanilla ice cream, i skipped adding cream. agree with the chocolate part. hopefully i do hope to add some more summer recipes. right now i am just adding recipes which are in drafts from a long time.
