About Carrot Juice

This fresh, homemade carrot juice with a hint of celery is a delightfully ambrosial breakfast beverage that makes waking up a little easier. With a vibrant orange hue and a sweet, earthy flavor, this healthy sipper is one of my favorite juices around.

Carrots and celery are part of the French cooking trinity known as mirepoix, so it should come as no surprise that these two veggies make excellent friends in the kitchen.

While you are free to juice carrots all by their lonesome, we love the bit of earthy flavor and all of the anti-inflammatory benefits that celery adds to the mix.

If fresh celery isn’t your favorite, there are plenty of ways to customize this carrot juice recipe to your liking. Skip down a section to the “Variations” heading and find other ways to make your own perfect blend!

In this recipe post, I’ll show you how to make carrot juice using a juicer (which is by far the easiest method), as well as using a blender. I just wanted to make sure that you could make this healthy yumminess at home, no matter what kind of equipment you have!

Please note that the blender method does require the additional step of straining the juice, but it will turn out just as tasty.

Depending on which method you use, this carrot juice recipe will be ready in about 5-10 minutes, making it perfect for even the busiest of days.

Variations

While we tend to like our carrot juice quite straightforward, there are many tasty ways to customize it to your liking. Here are a few additions you can mix and match:

  1. Lemon Juice – Add a squeeze of citrus to brighten up the celery carrot juice.
  2. Ginger – Carrots and ginger make for a zingy combination that is tantalizing. Fresh ginger root is preferred, but you can also use powdered ginger if it is all you have on hand. Just note that the particulates in ground ginger will settle more quickly than freshly juiced ginger root.
  3. Black Pepper – It might sound weird to put black pepper in your juice, but I can tell you that it is a real treat. Please be sure to grind your own pepper for the best flavor.
  4. Black Salt – Also known as kala namak, this Indian and Ayurvedic treasure lends a deliciously unique flavor to anything it touches. Not only is this a cooling ingredient, it can also help to relieve heartburn and aid in digestion.
  5. Turmeric – Loaded with antioxidants and powerful anti-inflammatory powers, this spicy and beautifully colored root is a delightful addition to your juice.
  6. Oranges or Grapefruit – If you prefer a sweeter carrot juice, try adding some oranges or grapefruit to the mix! Their bright, tangy, and sweet flavor pairs beautifully with carrots.
  7. Apples or Pears– Apples or pears are another great way to add some sweetness to your juice.
  8. Cucumber – If you like the idea of a more savory application, but aren’t sure that celery is your style, cucumber adds a lovely, fresh flavor.
  9. Sweeteners – Depending on the flavor of your carrot juice, you may wish to add a splash of maple syrup, honey, or agave to balance things out. This is also useful if you’ve added a bit too much lemon juice.

Carrot Juice Benefits

The recorded benefits of drinking carrot juice are numerous, which is part of why we love this drink so much! Carrots themselves are loaded with vitamins and nutrients including potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

Drinking carrot juice has been linked to positive health outcomes including:

  • Boosted immunity
  • Improved eyesight
  • Anticancer effects
  • Improved blood sugar
  • Improved heart health
  • Liver protection
  • Improved skin tone

With benefits like that, how could you not want to drink this fresh and tasty carrot juice?

Step-by-Step Guide

How to Make Carrot Juice

Making carrot juice is pretty straightforward. Below, I offer two separate methods of making the juice. Either way, be sure to start by properly prepping your carrots.

Prep Carrots

1. First, rinse the carrots very well, dry them with a clean kitchen towel or allow them to drain naturally, and peel them.

To properly rinse carrots, I soak them for 5 minutes in water with a bit of baking soda and apple cider vinegar to assist in removing any mud or pesticides.

Then, after draining the water, I soak them again in plain water for 2 minutes. Then later I rinse them thoroughly in running water removing all the dirt and mud if any.

I also like to add some celery in my carrot juice recipe because the flavors of carrot and celery pair very well. Of course, you can choose to omit celery if you prefer. Celery should also be rinsed and dried.

After they are dried completely and chopped, I place the carrots and celery bits in vegetable bags in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.

This makes it very easy to pull them out first thing in the morning to make my carrot juice.

Blender Method

2. Add both the carrots and celery to the blender. Add ¼ to ½ cup of water, or as needed. Be sure not to add too much water as this will thin the juice.

Only add water as required to help the carrot to blend in the blender or mixer-grinder.

3. Blend until smooth and fine, making sure there are no visible chunks of carrots left.

5. Place a bowl below a fine mesh strainer. Pour the blended carrot mixture onto the strainer to strain the juice.

6. Press the fiber pulp all over to extract as much juice as possible. Serve the carrot juice that has collected in the bowl immediately.

Tips & Tricks

Making your own homemade juice is not only easy, but it is also more healthful than the stuff you can get at the store.

Why, you ask? Because vegetable and fruit juices are best consumed as soon as they are prepared to ensure you get the most nutrients as possible.

Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way to make life a little easier:

  • Prep your fruits and veggies at least the night before you plan on making the juice. Then when you wake, all you have to do is juice or blend them!
  • Don’t waste the pulp! If you are using savory vegetables like carrots and celery together, use the pulp to make fritters or a vegetable broth. You can wrap the pulp in cheesecloth to avoid straining the broth if you prefer. If you are using solely sweet options (like carrots and oranges), try adding the pulp to muffins, waffles, or even granola.
  • Use young, tender carrots for the best possible flavor.
  • Soak carrots before juicing. This helps to make them a bit more tender, as well as helping to dislodge any leftover dirt or mud.

FAQs

Can I drink carrot juice every day?

While I always suggest you talk to a licensed nutrition professional for any specific diet advice, my short answer is YES! Carrot juice is highly nutritious and can easily be added to your morning routine for an added boost of essential vitamins and minerals.

Can I drink carrot juice on an empty stomach?

Sure! In fact, most practitioners of Ayurveda would suggest drinking fresh juices on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before eating to ensure you get the most nutritional advantage possible.

Can I make carrot juice ahead of time?

Generally speaking, it is best to drink fresh juice as soon as it is made because the nutrients begin to decompose rather quickly. If at all possible, drink it as soon as you press it! If you have any leftovers, feel free to use them up in soups or by making popsicles.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams carrots
  • 1 celery stem – optional
  • ¼ to ½ cup water – if using a blender

Instructions

Prep Carrots

  • Rinse the carrots very well in water. Dry them with a clean kitchen towel or allow them to drain naturally, and peel them.
  • Rinse the celery stem and dry it naturally or with a clean kitchen towel.
  • Chop carrots in small cubes. Chop the celery roughly.

Blender Method

  • Add both the carrots and celery to the blender. Add ¼ to ½ cup of water, or as needed. Take care not to add too much water as this will thin the juice. Only add water as required to help the carrot to pulverize in the blender.
  • Blend to a smooth and fine puree like consistency, making sure there are no visible small chunks of carrots in the mixture.
  • Place a bowl below a fine mesh strainer. Pour the blended carrot mixture onto the strainer to strain the juice.
  • With a spoon, press the fiber pulp all over to extract as much juice as possible. Serve the carrot juice that has collected in the bowl immediately.

Juicer Method

  • Add the carrot cubes and chopped celery in the feeder tube of your juice and extract the juice.
  • Serve the carrot juice immediately.

Notes

  • Use fresh, tender and juicy carrots to make the juice. Fibrous or rough carrots won’t extract more juice and can be difficult to blend if you use a blender.
  • If possible use organic carrots.
  • Serve carrot juice immediately as soon as you make it.
