rava toast recipe with step by step photos – actually this recipe of rava or sooji toast should have been an earlier post. i missed adding this post somehow strangely, considering the fact that i have been making this recipe from my teens.

this rava toast was and still is one of our favorite breakfast recipes. on one of the tv shows, i had seen one elderly lady making this recipe. i found it ridiculously easy to make and from thence on, i have made these crisp toasts. both me and my sister would make these easy to make toasts for breakfast or an evening snack. specially on those days when mom would be busy or gone out for some work.

the rava toast recipe calls for simple ingredients like onion, tomatoes and rava (sooji or semolina or cream of wheat). along with these ingredients, cream is also added. you can also add malai instead of cream.

the choice of bread is yours – white bread, whole wheat breadbrown bread or whole wheat sandwich bread. you can use fresh bread or even a few days old bread.

sooji or rava toast recipe - easy to prepare toast with semolina, onion, tomato and cream filling.

ingredients (1 cup = 250 ml)

for rava toast filling:

  • 1 small to medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small to medium tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili (hari mirch) - finely chopped
  • 2 to 3 teaspoon chopped coriander leaves (dhania patta)
  • 2 to 2.5 tablespoon sooji (rava or cream of wheat)
  • 2 to 2.5 tablespoon cream or malai - 25% to 30% low fat cream
  • salt as required

other ingredients for rava toast:

  • 5 to 6 bread slices (white, whole wheat or brown bread)
  • oil for frying the toast - ½ teaspoon oil for frying one slice and 1 to 1.5 teaspoon oil for frying two slices.

how to make recipe

  1. add the rava, onion, tomatoes, green chilies, coriander, cream and salt in a bowl. mix and keep aside.
  2. heat a tava or frying pan. on a hot tava or griddle, add 1/2 tsp oil for each bread. so if toasting two breads, you can add 1 to 1.5 tsp oil.
  3. on the bread slices, spread the rava mixture evenly with a spoon.
  4. place the filling side down and cook it till the onion tomatoes are lightly browned.
  5. turn over and toast the bread on the other side. you can flip once or twice and cook more if required.
  6. remove the rava toast. continue to making the rava toasts this way.
  7. slice the toast into triangular or rectangular pieces.
  8. serve the rava toast slices hot with green chutney or tomato ketchup.

recipe notes

  • this rava toast recipe can be doubled or tripled.
  • for kids, skip the green chili and you can just add a pinch of red chili powder or black pepper powder.

    • amrit, you can use fresh curd. don’t add butter.

  4. Good recipe. I did a small change to it. I cooked the filing and then put it on the toast, as I found it difficult to cook on the frying pan with the filing. this was like upma on toast. It turned out well.

  8. mam i tried it but wen i turned the stuffed side of dis pizza… my cream gets converted into ghee 🙁
    please tell me which mistake i did… 🙁

    • its due to the quality of cream. i also make a cream cheese toast like the above recipe and never had this issue. so its due to the quality of cream that its getting converted to ghee. instead of cream you can also add fresh dahi/curd.

    wat can we use instead of cream…?
    milk will be a good substitute by adding a little of it?
    or
    to make it lille bit tangy can v use curd?

    For sooji toast or rava toast receipe can we add a litttle water instead of cream or malai in the filling.

    • instead of water, you can add some curd/dahi. i would not suggest water as it might make the stuffing soggy.

    Another excellent idea ! Today when , I was having the leftover bhaji made using your fabulous pav bhaji recipe , I was thinking of the idea of adding rava to the bread I was heating. Wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. However now that I see you’ve made this fabulous recipe I will definitely go ahead and try adding rava to bread toast ! 🙂

    Btw thanks to your encouragement and fantastic recipe , I made the pav along with the bhaji . All in all it was a very satisfying experience. All I can say as usual is keep up the good work. Hope your work continues to inspire budding cooks like me ! 🙂

    • Curd is a better option than cream i hav been making this recepie since ages. One more thing i use is little baking soda which makes it fluffy n gives nice texture. Paneer n green bell pepper makes it yummy
