urad dal dosa recipe with step by step photos – this tasty dosa variety is simple and easy to make and requires no fermentation. i have not used rice or rice flour in this recipe. you can also check this instant dosa mix and instant dosa recipe.

this healthy dosa can be made for a breakfast or a quick snack. but make sure to serve the urad dal dosas hot as they may become a little dry once they cool down.

you could serve these healthy urad dal dosas with coconut chutney or sambar. it also goes well with the usual potato sabzi which are made with masala dosa.

i have been fond of dosas since my childhood. i have to make them once or twice in a week. i can have dosas without any sabzi or bhaji or chutney. just simple tea or coffee with dosas is enough for me.

urad dal dosa recipe

urad dal dosa recipe - crepes made from spilt black gram.

ingredients (1 cup = 250 ml)

  • 1 cup urad dal (husked and spilt black gram)
  • 3 to 4 fenugreek seeds (methi seeds)
  • salt as required
  • ¼ cup water
  • oil or ghee as required

how to make recipe

soaking urad dal:

  1. clean 1 cup urad dal (husked and spilt black gram) in water. 

  2. soak it with 3 to 4 methi dana (fenugreek seeds), overnight or for 4-5 hours.

making urad dal dosa batter:

  1. drain all the water and add the soaked ingredients into a wet grinder jar.

  2. add some water from the ¼ cup of water. grind them finely, till smooth. add more water if required while grinding.

  3. pour the batter in a vessel. add salt and mix well.

  4. if the batter is too thick, you could add some more water. but don't make the dosa batter thin as it will be difficult spreading the dosas on the griddle.

  5. the batter should be of pouring consistency.

making urad dal dosa:

  1. heat a non-stick tava or thick iron griddle. now take a ladle full of batter. pour the batter and gently spread the batter starting from the center and moving towards outwards.

  2. cook the dosa on low to medium flame. make the urad dal dosas, the way you would normally make dosas with oil or ghee.

  3. when you see the batter cooked on top.

  4. drizzle ¼  to ½ teaspoon oil on the edges and center.

  5. cook till the urad dal dosa looks crisp and golden. flip the dosa.

  6. cook till the other side is cooked.

  7. serve urad dal dosa hot with coconut chutney or sambar.

  1. Does this taste like normal dosa?

    • no it doesn’t taste like normal dosa as the batter is not fermented.

      • could you ferment the batter or is there a particular reason why not?

        • you can ferment the batter if you want. but just keep for 4 to 5 hours. this is basically a quick method of making this dosa.
