This Tawa Sandwich recipe is a simple but tasty grilled sandwich stuffed with a spiced potato filling. This sandwich is also made on a tawa or griddle. Makes for a yummy dish for those evening snack cravings.
Peel and mash 1 large boiled potato or 2 medium potatoes. You can steam or boil or pressure cook the potatoes in a pan, or a stovetop pressure cooker or instant pot. Add water as required while boiling or steaming the potatoes.
Take the mashed potatoes in a mixing bowl. Add the finely chopped bell pepper and onions to the mashed potatoes.
Add chaat masala, red chilli powder and salt as per taste
Mix very well. Check the taste and add more chaat masala, red chilli powder or salt if required.
Keep the potato stuffing aside.
Assembling
Slice the loaf in 0.5 inches width. Butter them evenly.
Now place the mixture and spread it all over the slices. Cover with the second slice.
Making tawa sandwich
Heat a thick bottomed tawa or a griddle and spread some butter on it. Keep heat from low to medium, depending on the heaviness and thickness of the tawa or griddle.
Place 1 to 2 prepared sandwiches on the tawa or griddle.
Now place a lid on the sandwiches. On top of the lid, place a weight.
You can also only place a heavy lid. The plate I used is not heavy, so I kept a heavy mortar on it.
Toast for a few minutes and remove the weight and lid or plate.
Spread some butter on the top. You do have to check with a spatula, to see how much they bottom has got browned. When the base becomes golden, then flip carefully using a spatula.
Now again place the lid and a weight on it. Again toast for a few minutes till the bottom is golden and crisp.
Once done, then remove griddle sandwich in a plate. Using the same technique, grill or toast the remaining prepared sandwiches on the griddle or tawa.
Serve Tawa Sandwich hot with tomato ketchup or mint-coriander chutney.
Notes
Spices can be added more or less as per your preferences.
Some grated cheese or paneer also can be added in the stuffing.
You can use any colored capsicum or red bell pepper or skip if you want.
Use a thick bottomed heavy tawa or griddle. Do not use a thin light weight tawa as the sandwiches may get burnt fast.
Regulate the heat as needed, depending on the size and heaviness of the griddle or tawa. It can range from low to medium heat.
You could also grill these sandwiches in a frying pan or a flat skillet instead of using the griddle.
Optionally together with the butter, use coriander chutney or mint-cilantro chutney or mayonnaise as a spread on the sandwiches.
