Affogato is a quick Italian dessert made with vanilla ice cream and hot espresso or strong coffee. The hot espresso melts the ice cream slightly, creating a creamy and smooth coffee dessert. This easy recipe can be made with espresso or instant coffee and takes only a few minutes to prepare. It is perfect for serving as a simple café-style dessert at home.
½ cup or 1 scoopice creamor gelato, vanilla flavor
25 to 30 ml hot espresso or strong hot coffee - see point no 1 in notes section below
Instructions
Add vanilla ice cream or gelato to a serving glass or dessert bowl.
Brew espresso or prepare strong instant coffee by mixing instant coffee with hot water. Check point no 1 in notes below for making the instant coffee.
Pour the hot espresso or instant coffee over the ice cream.
Serve affogato immediately.
Notes
If you do not have an espresso machine, make a strong hot coffee with instant coffee. Mix 1 to 1½ teaspoons instant coffee or instant espresso with 2 tablespoons hot water.
Instant espresso powder gives a richer and stronger flavor than instant coffee.
Use freshly brewed strong espresso or coffee for the best taste.
Serve immediately after pouring the coffee.
You can add chocolate shavings, nuts or cocoa powder for garnish.
Adjust the coffee strength according to your preference.
Affogato is best prepared one serving at a time, as the hot espresso should be poured fresh over the ice cream just before serving.
