Sweet poha recipe with step by step photos – sweet aval is a sweet snack made with poha (flattened rice), jaggery, milk, coconut and banana. This is one of those quick fix recipes to feed hungry kids. We grew up having this one and it was made by mom many times as a quick evening snack.
This sweet poha is a Goan recipe. there are some variations in preparing this one. I follow my mom’s recipe with just one change. I add a bit more milk. In this recipe the jaggery is just chopped and added. Bananas are also added. They taste very good with the combo of poha, jaggery and milk. Sometimes I make this even with coconut milk.
With red poha, it tastes very good. I did not have red poha, so used white poha. You can use either thick or thin poha. This is so good, that even adults enjoy it along with kids. This recipe serves just one serving. You can easily increase the proportions of the ingredients.

sweet aval
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup thick or thin poha, you can also add ½ cup thick poha
- 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped or grated organic jaggery or jaggery powder
- 1 small to medium banana (chopped)
- ⅓ cup warm milk
- 1 tablespoon grated coconut
Instructions
- In a strainer, rinse 1/3 cup poha in water for a couple of times. Strain very well and keep them aside. The poha should soften while rinsing.
- Now peel and slice 1 banana in a small bowl.
- Add 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped or crumbled/grated jaggery on top.
- You can also grate the jaggery and add. You can also use jaggery powder. I have used organic jaggery here, which has no impurities. If using regular jaggery, then I suggest to melt the jaggery in a bit of water. Then strain the jaggery syrup and add. You can also use palm jaggery.
- Then add 1 tablespoon grated coconut.
- Add the poha.
- Next add 1/3 cup warm milk. Warm the milk in a small pan before you add. You can add less or more milk.
- Mix and then serve sweet poha or milk poha immediately.
Notes
- add less or more jaggery as per your requirements.
- you can add less or more milk.
- coconut milk can be used instead of dairy milk.
- palm jaggery can be used instead of sugarcane jaggery.
