aloo sandwich on tawa with step by step photos – simple but delicious grilled sandwiches stuffed with a spiced potato filling. these grilled sandwiches are made on tawa or skillet. with the same method you can make grilled sandwiches with different stuffings like paneer, vegetables, cheese, mushroom etc.

this method is good if you do not have an electric sandwich maker. you can make any grilled sandwich using this method. if you have a sandwich maker, then you can easily toast or grill them.

these potato sandwiches are easy to make. all you need is a good homemade loaf, mashed potatoes and the regular indian spices. i make these as a quick bite on some days. when i boil potatoes, i boil some extra potatoes. you never know where they will come handy. i keep in the fridge and use them in a day or two. you can use them to make a variety of snacks recipes like:

for making sandwiches i always used whole wheat loaf. most of the times i bake whole wheat bread at home. so when i do plan to have sandwiches for snacks or breakfast, i bake the loaf a day or a couple of days before and refrigerate. in the recipe i have used homemade whole wheat bread. with whole wheat breads, the sandwiches are not light, but are filling. they do keep you full for some time.

serve these aloo sandwich with tomato ketchup or eggless mayo or any dip. it also goes very well with mint-coriander chutney.

how to make grilled potato sandwich on tawa or griddle.

INGREDIENTS FOR aloo sandwich on tawa

(1 CUP = 250 ML)
  • 10 to 12 bread slices
  • 1 large potato or 150 grams potatoes (aloo)
  • 1 medium bell pepper or 1/3 cup finely chopped pepper
  • 1 small onion or 30 grams onions or 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala or add as required
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder or add as required
  • salt as per taste
  • butter as required

HOW TO MAKE aloo sandwich on tawa

making potato stuffing

  • peel and mash 1 large potato or 2 medium potatoes (150 grams). you can steam or boil or pressure cook the potatoes.
  • now add 1/3 cup finely chopped pepper and 1/4 cup finely chopped onion to the mashed potatoes. you can use any colored capsicum or red bell pepper or skip if you want. some grated cheese also can be added.
  • add 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala, 1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder and salt as per taste
  • mix very well. check the taste and add more chaat masala, red chilli powder or salt if required.
  • keep the potato stuffing aside.

  • slice the loaf in 0.5 inches width. butter them evenly.
  • now place the mixture and spread it all over the slices. cover with the second slice.
  • heat a thick bottomed tawa or a griddle and spread some butter on it.
  • place the potato sandwiches on the tawa.
  • now place a lid on the sandwiches. on top of the lid, place a weight. 
  • you can also only place a heavy lid. the plate i used is not heavy, so i kept a heavy mortar on it. toast for a few minutes.
  • spread some butter on the top. you do have to check with a spatula, to see how much they base has got browned. when the base becomes golden, then flip.
  • now again place the lid and a weight on it. again toast for a few minutes till the base is golden and crisp.
  • once done, then remove potato sandwiches in a plate.
  • serve these potato sandwiches hot with tomato ketchup or mint-coriander chutney.

RECIPE TIPS

  • spices can be added more or less as per your preferences.
  • some grated cheese or paneer also can be added in the stuffing.
