vinayaka chaturthi or ganesh chaturthi is one of the most important festival in maharashtra and is celebrated with a lot of devotion and celebration. this year ganesh chaturthi is starting on 13th september 2018 and as usual will last for 10 days.
there are many recipes which are prepared specially for ganesha chaturthi festival. i am sharing maharashtrian recipes from the blog, that can be made during the vinayaka chaturthi festival.
sweet recipes for ganesh chaturthi festival:
lord ganesha is fond of sweets and it is common to make sweet recipes for ganesh chaturthi. modak is lord ganesha’s favorite sweet and is prepared in almost every household. apart from modaks, ladoos are also prepared in many homes. sharing some modak, ladoos and a few traditional recipes from the blog.
1. ukadiche or steamed modak – this is the most popular modak recipe. it is also sold in many sweets shop during ganesh chaturthi festival. many people take special orders to prepare this modak. usually, on the first day of ganesh chaturthi festival, modak is made.
2. fried modak – step by step recipe.
3. rava modak or semolina modak – this is an easy modak recipe as no frying or steaming of the modaks is required. step by step recipe as well as a video illustrating the process of making these easy rava modaks.
4. dry fruits modak – sweet dumplings made from rice flour and stuffed with mixture of mawa, poppy seeds, coconut and dry fruits.

main course recipes for vinayaka chaturthi:
1. poori bhaji – lightly spiced potato bhaji or sabzi, served with poori or indian flat bread.
2. aloo methi – made using baby methi leaves and potatoes.
3. varan bhaat – goan style. varan bhaat made with lentils and coconut.
4. varan bhaat – maharashtrian style. delicious lentil stew or dal made with pigeon pea lentils and served with rice. served as naivedyam to lord ganesha
5. kala vatana sambar – malvani style sambar made during ganesh chaturthi.
6. kala vatana amti – no onion no garlic coconut based black peas curry. tastes best with rice pooris, bhakris, ambolis (a dosa variety) and steamed rice.
7. alu vadi or patra – also known as pathrode. these are shallow fried and tempered steamed colocasia leaves. snack from maharashtra and gujarat regions.
8. chawli usal – spicy coconut based curry made with black eyed beans.
9. moong dal khichdi – special khichdi offered as naivedyam for lord ganesha. made using minimal ingredients.
10. sabudana khichdi – tapioca pearls cooked with potatoes and peanuts. very popular fasting or vrat recipe.
11. sabudana thalipeeth – crisp and soft pancakes made with tapioca pearls, mashed potatoes, ground peanuts and spices.
12. batata bhaji or aloo sabzi – no onion no garlic batata bhaji
13. masale bhaat – a spiced rice preparation with mix vegetables. no onion no garlic recipe.
14. rice pooris – soft fluffy pooris made with rice flour. these pooris go well with kale vatanyche amti or sambar
15. katachi amti – lightly spiced and tempered dal.
16. maharashtrian kadhi – slighly sweet and tempered yogurt sauce.
17. green peas usal (matar usal) – no onion no garlic recipe of green peas usal
18. amti dal – slightly spiced and sweet and tangy dal. no onion no garlic recipe.
19. pooris – made from whole wheat flour.
snacks recipes for vinayaka chaturthi:
1. batata bhajji or aloo pakora – crisp golden batter coated fried potato slices.
2. batata pohe or potato poha – popular maharashtrian breakfast recipe made from flattened rice and potatoes.
3. khamang kakdi – cucumber salad. also known as kakdi chi koshimbir.
4. kothimbir vadi – crisp coriander steamed fritters.
5. suran chips – fried chips made from yam.
6. sabudana vada – fritters made from tapioca pearls. also made during religious fasting days or vrat.
7. spicy sabudana khichdi – sabudana khichdi is made with soaked tapioca pearls and flavored with cumin seeds, roasted peanut powder or crushed peanuts and green chilies.
8. poha chiwda – chiwda made from flattened rice and dry fruits.
9. savory shankarpali – crisp and savory fried snack made during festive ocassion, especially in maharashtra.
10. chakli – deep fried snack made from rice flour, gram flour, wheat flour or a mixture of lentil flours.
11. shankarpali – crisp, fried flour diamonds.
