Barfi is basically a milk based fudge. traditionally the base is always khoya. However even condensed milk, milk powder or milk can be used to make barfis. There are many variations of making barfi like:

With the goodness of almonds and pistachios, this barfi is easy to prepare and just takes about 20 to 25 minutes. The recipe can also be doubled.

Serve them plain or with a glass of milk. Since made with almonds, these barfi are good for winters.

Note: the color difference in the step by step pics is due to darkness in the kitchen. Being winters here, its cloudy and dark all day long and more so in the kitchen.

Step by step badam pista barfi recipe:

1. These are the ingredients for making burfi. ½ cup almonds, ½ cup pistachios, ⅓ cup sugar, 3 green cardamoms and 100 grams or ¾ cup grated Khoya.

2. Heat a pan and on a low flame roast the almonds and pistachios lightly for about 2 to 3 minutes. Make sure they don’t get browned. Just a light roasting.

3. Meanwhile, grease a tray or plate with ¼ tsp ghee.

4. Once the almonds and pistachios cool down, take them in a grinder. Also add the seeds from 3 green cardamoms pods.

5. grind to a powdery texture. if there are tiny pieces or bits of almonds or pistachios, its fine. Don’t grind too much as then oil would release from the nuts.

6. In the same pan, directly grate the khoya.

7. add ⅓ cup sugar.

8. keep the pan on a low flame and begin to stir the mixture.

9. Keep on stirring the mixture continuously.

10. Both the khoya and sugar would begin to melt. The consistency of mixture would become slightly thin. So as soon you see the mixture bubbling and slightly thickening, remove the pan from fire. Here we don’t need to cook the khoya more, as the powdered almonds and pistachios help in binding the barfi. Don’t over cook as then the barfi will become chewy.

11. add the powdered almonds, pistachios & cardamom mixture.

12. Mix quickly and very well.

13. Pour the barfi mixture on the greased tray and spread it to a layer of ½ inch thickness from all sides.

14. Level the top with the spatula.

16. Sprinkle some finely chopped or powdered almonds and pistachios all over the barfi. with a spatula or your fingers lightly press the chopped dry fruits on the barfi.

18. Once cooled at room temperature, slice badam pista barfi.

Serve badam pista barfi straight away or store in an air tight box. These stay well for 3 to 4 days in a cold climate. Otherwise keep in the fridge.

  • 100 grams khoya (mawa) – about ¾ cup grated khoya
  • 60 grams badam (almonds) or ½ cup badam
  • 60 grams unsalted pista (pistachios) or ½ cup pista
  • 60 grams sugar or ⅓ cup sugar
  • 3 green cardamoms
  • ¼ teaspoon Ghee for greasing a tray or plate
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon of sliced or chopped or powdered almonds and pistachios for garnish

  • Add the powdered almonds, pistachios and cardamom mixture.
