mumbai street style food is a hit at home. originally being from mumbai, we do miss the awesome street food from there. so i do try to make various snacks from mumbai that have now become delicious memories for us. already i have shared many mumbai street food recipes and some more are in the drafts.

these cheese chili toasts are not the regular open toasts. these are basically cheese toast sandwiches which are spiced with green chilies. green sandwich chutney is also smeared on the bread, which makes the sandwiches more flavorful. other delicious variations you may like are:

when making mumbai style sandwiches, i always use amul processed cheese. though you can even use cheddar cheese or processed cheese from any other brand. i have used chaat masala. you can also use sandwich masala.

mumbai cheese chilli toast sandwich recipe - tasty toast sandwiches made with cheese, green chilies, green chutney and spices+herbs.

ingredients (1 cup = 250 ml)

for green chutney:

  • ½ cup tightly packed coriander leaves OR ¼ cup EACH of mint leaves and coriander leaves
  • ¼ teaspoon chaat masala powder or add as required
  • 1 green chili or add as required
  • salt as required
  • 1 to 2 teaspoon of water for grinding (optional)

other ingredients for cheese chilli toast:

  • ½ cup grated cheese - can use processed cheese or cheddar cheese
  • 1 to 1.5 teaspoons finely chopped green chillies
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped capsicum (shimla mirch)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves (dhania patta)
  • ½ teaspoon chaat masala or add as required
  • pinch of black salt (optional)
  • 8 to 10 bread slices - whole wheat bread or multi grain bread or white bread
  • salted butter as required

how to make recipe?

for making green chutney:

  1. rinse the coriander leaves very well in water.
  2. then add all the ingredients mentioned under the list 'for green chutney' in a grinder or small blender. 

  3. do not add any water and grind to a smooth consistency. if required you can add 1 to 2 teaspoons of water.

  4. remove the green chutney in a bowl. cover and keep aside.

making cheese chilli toast:

  1. grate cheese in a bowl or a plate. you will need ½ cup grated cheese.
  2. add 1 to 1.5 teaspoons finely chopped green chillies, 2 tablespoons finely chopped capsicum and 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves.
  3. then add ½ teaspoon chaat masala and a pinch of black salt (optional).
  4. mix very well with a spoon. keep aside.
  5. spread salted butter on all the bread slices. cover the whole surface with the butter. 

  6. you can slice of the edges if you want.

  7. spread green chutney as required. i have mentioned the recipe to prepare green chutney in the recipe card.
  8. now place the cheese mixture evenly on the bread slices.
  9. cover the cheese topped slices with the remaining buttered slices.
  10. in a pre heated sandwich maker, place the sandwich carefully.
  11. spread some butter on the top of the sandwiches. do not press the top cover of the sandwich maker too much.
  12. toast for 2 to 3 minutes or till the sandwiches are crisp and golden. remove in a plate.
  13. spread some butter on the side where we did not apply butter first. this step is optional and you can skip it.
  14. serve mumbai style cheese chilli toasts with green chutney and tomato ketchup.

tips for making mumbai style cheese chilli toast recipe:

  • you can skip capsicum (green bell pepper) if you want.
  • some onions can also be added to the cheese stuffing.
  • i have here used whole wheat bread. you can use multi grain bread, white bread, ragi bread or brown bread.


how to make mumbai cheese chilli toast recipe:

a) for preparing green chutney:

1. take ½ cup rinsed & tightly packed coriander leaves, ¼ tsp chaat masala powder, 1 green chili & salt as per taste in a chutney grinder jar.

2. blend all the ingredients to a smooth consistency. no need to add water as there is enough moisture after rinsing the coriander leaves to help them grind to a smooth chutney. but if you cannot grind, then add 1 or 2 teaspoons of water.

 3. remove the chutney in a bowl. cover and keep aside.

b) preparing cheese chilli toast:

1. grate cheese in a small mixing bowl or plate. you will need ½ cup grated cheese.

2. add 1 to 1.5 teaspoons finely chopped green chillies, 2 tablespoons finely chopped capsicum and 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves.
