method to make rice flour at home explained with step by step pics. during festival time many snacks are made which has rice flour as one of the main ingredient. snacks like murukku, adirasam, ribbon pakoda, omapodi, modak, kozhukattai, appams etc use rice flour. when offering any food to deities its better to make rice flour at home instead of using store brought rice flour.

in this post, i am sharing how i make rice flour at home. i had made this rice flour to make murukku for diwali. so i thought i will take pics and share the method. you can use any quantity of rice. smaller quantities can be ground in a mixer-grinder, but for large quantities give in a grinding mill (chakki).

one of my readers had informed me that for south indian snacks a type of rice called as IR 20 raw rice is used. this rice is easily available in tamil nadu. but not in other parts of india. where i live IR 20 raw rice is not available. so i have used sona masuri rice to make the flour. if you live in tamil nadu, then you can use IR 20 raw rice. if you do not get IR 20 raw rice, then use any short to medium grained regular rice.

after making the rice flour, store in an airtight jar. you can even refrigerate or freeze rice flour.

homemade rice flour recipe - method to make rice flour at home for snacks or recipes where rice flour is needed.

ingredients (1 cup = 250 ml)
  • 1.5 cups rice (285 grams rice) or as required in small quantities
  • water as required
how to make recipe
soaking rice:
  1. take the required quantity of rice you will need. rinse in water a couple of times and then soak for 2 to 3 hours in enough water. i used 1.5 cups of sona masuri rice.

  2. after 2 to 3 hours, drain all the water.

drying rice:
  1. now place a large clean kitchen napkin or kitchen towel on the countertop or on a table. spread the rice on the kitchen towel. let the rice grains dry in shade for about about 45 minutes to 1 hour. do not dry in the sun.

  2. the rice grains should have a faint moist touch to them. they should not be completely dry.

making rice flour in a mixer-grinder:
  1. then add the rice grains in a grinder jar.

  2. grind to a fine consistency. i ground rice grains in one batch. but if you use more cups of rice, then you will have to grind in 2 to 3 batches.

  3. take the rice flour in a fine sieve and then sift it.

  4. after sieving you will see small granules of rice grains in the sieve. you can add these back to the grinder jar and then grind again and sift again. or you can use these small idli rava like rice grains to make idli or dosa or any recipe that calls for rice rava.

  5. now spread the rice flour in the plate and let it dry for some more time till its completely dry.

  6. then spoon the rice flour in an air tight container. store in a cool place and use as required. if the recipe calls for roasting the rice flour, then you can roast till you see some steam coming from it. if not using in a few days, then you can refrigerate or freeze rice flour. from 1.5 cups of rice, i got 2.33 cups rice flour.


how to make rice flour recipe:

11. then spoon the rice flour in an air tight container. store in a cool place and use as required. if the recipe calls for roasting the rice flour, then you can roast till you see some steam coming from it. if not using in a few days, then you can refrigerate or freeze rice flour. 1.5 cups of rice yields about 2.33 cups of rice flour.
